The story about the bra being invented by Otto Titzling, and him losing a lawsuit with Phillippe de Brassiere over the name of the garment, is an urban myth – originating in a 1971 book (Bust–Up: The Uplifting Tale of Otto Titzling and the Development of the Bra, by Wallace Reyburn) and promulgated in the 1988 film Beaches (starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey).
